Kestra[?], the driver, remains half-unconscious from the shock of the shot's impact. "Hurry. Hurry!!" SFX: キリキリ Kirikiri (sound of spinning) SFX: ズズ Zuzu (sound of turning a gear wheel) ２人がかりでも、１１ｔの砲塔は 重い。 Futari gakari de mo, 11t no houtou wa omoi. A handful of the Russian soldiers who were left behind persisted amazingly. SFX: パン Pan (sound of signal-flare gun being fired) 「ケルシャー グルーバー 発砲ヤメロ」 "Kerushaa Guruubaa Happou yamero" "Kerscher, Gruber - stop shooting." ------------------------------------------------------------------------ [Panel 2] Carius's flare reaches its apogee and explodes, illuminating his Tiger tank just as gunner Kramer fires the 88mm cannon. SFX: ポ Po (sound of the flare) 「クラーマー 歩兵の前面３０ｍに ３発撃ちこめ」 "Kuraamaa Hohei no zenmen 30m ni 3 patsu uchikome "Kramer - fire 3 shots 30 meters in front of the infantrymen." Soon after the 3rd shot landed, the infantrymen jumped out. 「突撃！！」 "Totsugeki!!" "Charge!!" Before the gunsmoke disappeared, they sprinted with all their might towards the enemy's position. すべて打合せどおりに 進行した。 Subete uchiawase doori ni shinkou shita. Everything proceeded as previously arranged. SFX: チーン チーン キン Chi-n chi-n kin (sounds of shots hitting the tank) SFX: ヴィィィ Viii (sound of the tank's machine gun being fired) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ [Panel 13] A Russian machine gunner hidden amongst the farmhouse ruins attempts to stave off the advance of Carius. どうしても 一挺の機関銃が だまらない。 Doushitemo ichou no kikanjuu ga damaranai. One machine gun that's not silenced by any means. SFX: タタタ Tatata (sound of the gun) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ [Panel 14] A cross-sectional view of two Russian soldiers dug in beneath the debris of the farmhouse ruin. German soldiers carry the dead and wounded toward Carius's tank, already covered with injured soldiers. Explosions in the distance light up the sky and bathe the battlefield in a garish glow. 敵前で 戦死者と 負傷者を 収容した。 Tekizen de senshisha to fushousha o shuuyou shita. In the face of the enemy, (Carius) collected the dead and injured men. 後退せざるを 得なかった。 Koutai sezaru o enakatta. He couldn't help retreating. ロシア側の損害も 大きかった。 Roshia-gawa no songai mo ookikatta. SFX: ヴィィィ ヴィィィ．．ン Viii viii..n (sounds of firing the tank's machine gun) SFX: グワ Guwa (sound of an explosion) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ [Panel 2] From his perch atop the commander's cupola, Carius looks down upon four soldiers being transported on the Tiger tank. ドイツ側の損害は ８名の歩兵中 ２名戦死 ２名負傷 Doitsu-gawa no songai wa 8-mei no hoheichuu 2-mei senshi 2-mei fushou The damage on the German side was 2 dead and 2 injured out of the 8 infantrymen. SFX: ゴゴゴ Gogogo (sound of the tank) 片足を 失った少年兵が、苦痛と ショックで 泣き叫ぶ。 Kata-ashi o ushinatta shounen-hei ga, kutsuu to shokku de nakisakebu. A young soldier who lost a leg cries out in pain and shock. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ [Panel 3] A tarp containing the lifeless body of the second lieutenant is slung between three German infantrymen as they approach a waiting supply truck. Miyazaki has chosen not to color the soldiers and truck. All is white save for the slate blue sky. あの若い少尉を 失ったのは 痛手だった。 Ano wakai shoui o ushinatta no wa itade datta. Losing that young second lieutenant was a heavy blow. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ [Panel 4] Carius stares forlornly into space. 名前も 知らなかったな... Namae mo shiranakatta na... I didn't even know his name.... [text above Carius's head (his thoughts)] 戦場の無慈悲さに カリウスは ついに 慣れることが できなかった。 Senjou no mujihisa ni Kariusu wa tsuini nareru koto ga dekinakatta. Carius couldn't get used to mercilessness of the battlefield at all. 彼は 独ソ戦の泥沼の中でも 正気を 失わなっかたのだ。 Kare wa dokusosen no doronuma no naka de mo shouki o ushinawanakatta no da. He didn't lose his sanity even in the bog of the German-Soviet war. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ [Panel 5] Major Haase hands Carius a bottle in a candlelit room inside the bunker at the Kinderheim. キンダーハイムへ 報告へ 行った Kindaahaimu e houkoku e itta. He went to the Kinderheim to report. 「ブランデーだ まずいっぱいやれ」 "Burandee da Mazu ippai yare" "It's brandy. Drink a glass first." もはや、ハーゼは カリウスを 青二才の少尉あつかいに しなかった。 Mohaya, Haaze wa Kariusu o aonisai no shoui atsukai ni shinakatta. Haase didn't treat Carius like a greenhorn second lieutenant any longer. 心から 信用するように なっていたのだ。 Kokoro kara shinyou suru you ni natte ita no da. He had come to believe (in Carius) from his heart. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ [Panel 6] Carius issues orders to his waiting crew as he approaches his Tiger tank on foot. 「持場へ もどろう」 "Mochiba e modorou" "Let's go back to our position." ------------------------------------------------------------------------ [Panel 7] Ruin 2 occupies the foreground as Ruin 3 is visible in the distance. Only the earthen chimney of Ruin 3 stands. Even when there was nothing (else happening), (the Russians) were swatting flies as usual. 動きつづけなければならない。 Ugoki tsuzukenakereba naranai. Smoke and flame surround Carius as he escapes Russian artillery fire yet ag ain. 午後４時 Gogo 4-ji 4 PM カリウス小隊が かけつけ Ｔ―３４ ６、Ｔ―６０ １ ＰＡＫ １を 撃破。 Kariusu-shoutai ga kaketsuke T-34 6, T-60 1 PAK 1 o gekiha. Carius's platoon rushes there and destroys 6 T-34s, 1 T-60, and 1 PAK. しかし、突出部は ロシア軍のものと なる。 Shikashi, tosshutsubu wa Roshia-gun no mono to naru. However, the protrusion point becomes the Russian army's territory. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ [Panel 4] The Tigers of Carius and Kerscher(?) approach Ruin 2 as it comes under heavy Russian attack. 午後５時 Gogo 5-ji 5 PM そこへ 廃虚２より 緊急無電。 Soko e haikyo 2 yori kinkyuu-muden. (Carius) hurries back immediately. (Good work, Carius!!) Ｔ―３４ ２輌を 撃破。 T-34 2-ryou o gekiha. (Carius) destroyed 2 T-34s. 歩兵を 追い払いすぐ又もどった Hohei o oiharai sugu mata modotta He chased away the infantrymen, and returned again soon. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ [Panel 6] Major Haase, gun at the ready, leads the attack on foot. German infantrymen follow him, as does a shocked Carius in his tank. 午後６時 Gogo 6-ji 6 PM ハーゼの反撃を 援護した。 Haaze no hangeki o engo shita. (Carius) backed up Haase's counterattack. ハーゼは、連隊長みずから 突撃の先頭に 立って カリウスを ﾑっくりさせた。 Haaze wa, rentaichou mizukara totsugeki no sentou ni tatte Kariusu o bikkuri saseta. Haase, leading the assault himself as regimental commander, surprised Carius. (Carius) waits for orders beside Ruin 1, and sleeps a little.
