Zenkai made: 1944-nen 3-gatsu 17-nichi souchou.  Soren-gun wa tetsudou o
koe dai-kougeki o hokki.
  (Our story) up to last time: March 17, 1944, early morning.  The Soviet
army crossed over the railroad and initiated a big bombardment.

カリウスたち２両のティーガーは、第一波６両の敵戦車を 撃破したのだが・・・。
Kariusu-tachi 2-ryou no Tiigaa wa, dai-ippa 6-ryou no teki-sensha o gekiha
shita no da ga....
  Carius and his men's 2 Tigers defeated 6 enemy tanks of the first wave,
but....

The Tigers of Carius and Kerscher come under "friendly fire."  A shell
impacts too close for comfort.

  "Kerscher, don't back up!!  You'll fall into a hole."

A message printed on a tattered scroll.

敵味方を まちがえる 誤射、誤爆は 戦場で 良くあることだったが、
Teki-mikata o machigaeru gosha, gobaku wa senjou de yoku aru koto datta ga,
この日のカリウス小隊は、友軍の混乱に 足を ひっぱられ つづけた。
kono hi no Kariusu shoutai wa, yuugun no konran ni ashi o hipparare
tsuzuketa.
  Mistaking one's own side for the enemy, miss-shooting, and miss-bombing
often happened on a battlefield; but this day the disorder of the allied
army continued, standing in the way of Carius's platoon moving.

A pensive Carius sits in his Tiger tank as a shaft of light streams in
through an observation slit, illuminating his face.

As a shell impacts nearby, German artillery observers are barely visible
under the protection of a log-covered observation post.  Miyazaki gives us
his historical perspective.

  The observation post staff, who had dust thrown into their eyes by the
Russian army's bombardment, drew back once again.

今も キンダーハイミムの丘に、この観測所の跡が 残っている
Ima mo Kindaahaimu no oka ni, kono kansoku-jo no ato ga nokotte iru
  Even now, the site of this observation post remains at the Kinderheim

Carius pops his head out of the commander's cupola and looks skyward, as
shells fly overhead and impact nearby.

うまくいった。友軍の砲撃が とまった。が... その時
Umaku itta.  Yuugun no hougeki ga tomatta.  Ga... sono toki
  It worked.  The bombardment from the allied army stopped.  But, at the
same time....

Carius and Kerscher move their tanks around, attempting to dodge the
incoming shells.

  Predict the enemy's revised aim, move the tank at the last moment, and
avoid the bombardment.

A Russian shell impacts next to Carius's Tiger, damaging one of the tank's
treads.

A Russian soldier intently inspects a map as a fly circles over his head.
  A larger version of the map (laid out in grids, with Carius's zig-zag
movements penciled in) is illustrated behind the soldier.

Through the periscope of Carius's tank we see the ruins of a farmhouse,
with only its earthen chimney visible.

  "We'll graze the farmhouse (Ruin 1).  Pay attention to the
[?]-soldiers!!"

Carius passes by the concealed Russian troops (pictured in the foreground).

A row of Russian heavy artillery fire simultaneously.

  "Swatting the flies" led into the preparatory bombardment for the second
offensive.

正午 一寸 すぎ 再び 戦区 全体が 弾幕に おおわれた

  Right before noon, the whole sector was covered by the barrage.

Carius and his Tiger depart the area heading into a wall of smoke, a result
of the bombardment.

  Under gunfire, Carius retraced his path to the rear of Ruin 1.

Carius and Kerscher, surrounded by fire and smoke, sit and wait.

そこに いすわる。 踏切りまで３００ｍ  絶好の射点。
Soko ni isuwaru.         Fumikiri made 300m       Zekkou no shaten.
  He stayed there.  300 meters to the railway crossing.  The best shooting
point.

砲撃のおかげで 歩兵の心配は ない。
Hougeki no okage de hohei no shimpai wa nai.
  Thanks to the bombardment, he didn't need to worry about the infantrymen.

In the commander's cupola of his tank, Carius assesses the situation over
the radio to Kerscher, then instructs his own radio man.

  "Kerscher - when the impacts (of the barrage) move, our guests will
come."

  "Roger."

「無線士  砲撃中、土手を 見張ってくれ   歩兵も 来そうだ」

Through the forward observation slit in the commander's cupola, Carius
spies a Russian tank in the distance.

  "They came!  It's a KV - in front of the gun turret."

From outside the tank, only Carius's eyes are visible through the
observation slit.  Miyazaki laments the limitations of drawing comics.

３００ｍは 戦車戦では、至近 距離だ
300m wa sensha-sen dewa, shikin kyori da
  300 meters is the shortest range for tank fighting.

しかし、マンガでは 正確に 表現しようが ない
Shikashi, manga dewa seikaku ni hyougen shiyou ga nai
  But in the comic, I can't draw the representation accurately.

A scroll separates Miyazaki (as a pig) holding a paper tube to his eyes to
the right, and a model Russian tank illustrated to the left.  Miyazaki uses
this setup to determine the appearance that the real Russian KV tank would
have had in Carius's field of view through his observation slit.

Doitsu-hei wa kouzoku no sensha o tori-nigasu no o osoreta kara da.
  Because the Russian soldiers were afraid to block their only attack path,
and the German soldiers were afraid to miss (any) following tanks.

as he communicates by radio with Kerscher from within the tank.

Shell casings litter the floor inside Carius's Tiger tank.  As Carius peers
out of the forward observtion slit in the commander's cupola, a crew member
slams another round into the breech.

「いまのやつまだ 動いている  もう 一発！！」
"Ima no yatsu mada ugoite iru         Mou ippatsu!!"
  "The one we just shot is still moving.  One more shot!!"

「ンセッ」
"Nse"
  (grunt?)

「１２時  線路 土手に 歩兵 多数！！」

  "A lot of soldiers on the railroad embankment at 12 o'clock!!"

[Panel 7]

A Russian tank emerges from the smoke.  In the periscope's view, triangular
markings are superimposed on the tank as reference marks so that Carius can
calculate the range to target.  Illustrated below the tank, Miyazaki (with
a small triangle hovering over his head) tries to figure out the math on a
piece of paper.

「出た！！」
"Deta!!"
  "It came out!!"

「エート、２シュトリヒで ３０００ｍか。２０シュトリヒで △が ５つで ３００
ｍ」
"E-to, 2 shutorihi de 3000m ka.  20 shutorihi de △ ga 5 tsu de 300m"

cannon of Carius's Tiger.

Only one of Carius's eyes is visible as he peers out from an observation
slit in the commander's cupola.

「目標 歩兵へ     榴弾 こめっ  移動 する  イヤッ... マテッ！！」
"Mokuhyou hohei e    Ryuudan kome   Idou suru       Iya... mate!!"
  "Target the infantrymen.  Load a shell.  We'll move.  No... wait!!"

[Panel 10]

Russian soldiers run off to the right as a Russian tank burns in the
background; another tank in the foreground rotates its turret, preparing to
fire.

「砲塔だけ 生きている！  左から 三輌めだ  イソゲ！！」
"Houtou dake ikite iru!  Hidari kara san-ryoume da  Isoge!!"
  "The gun turret is still alive!  Third tank from the left.  Hurry!"

Kramer's face is partially hidden as he peers through the gunsight and
fires.

ロシアの戦車兵は、おそるべき 粘りの持主 だった。
Roshia no sensha-hei wa, osoru-beki nebari no mochinushi datta.
  The Russian tank soldiers were masters of tenacity.

それに 戦車 そのものも、しぶとい 生命力を 持っていた。
Soreni sensha sono mono mo, shibutoi seimei-ryoku o motte ita.
  Moreover, (their) tanks themselves also had a stubborn vital power.

Carius's Tiger tank blocks the view of the unfortunate Russian tank as it
explodes.  Only a large plume of smoke marks its end.

その勇敢な 戦車は 大バクハツ した。
Sono yuukanna sensha wa dai-bakuhatsu shita.
  That brave tank made a big explosion.

The Tigers of Carius and Kerscher, machine guns and cannons blazing, fire
on the Russians.

肉攻兵を さけて 距離を とり 撃ちまくった。
Nikukou[?]-hei o sakete kyori o tori uchimakutta.
  He avoided the [?]-soldiers and kept pounding away at a distance.

ロシア兵は 乱れずに 土手のむこうへ もどっていった。
Roshia-hei wa midarezu ni dote no mukou e modotte itta.
  The Russian soldiers returned over the embankment without falling into
disorder.

まだ 増援は 来ない。
Mada zouen wa konai.
  The reinforcements haven't come yet.

A sweating Carius repairs his damaged periscope inside the commander's
cupola.

  The end of the 2nd attack.  1:30 P.M.

ロシア兵が このまま 引き下がる はずが ない。
Roshia-hei ga kono mama hikisagaru hazu ga nai.
  It's impossible that the Russian soldiers will withdraw as it is.

弾丸が 心細く なって来た。
Dangan ga kokorobosoku natte kita.
  The number of shells (remaining) became discouraging.

ペリスコープを とりかえつつ カリウスは はじめて 不安に なった。
Periskoupu o torikae tsutsu Kariusu wa hajimete fuan ni natta.
  Carius, changing the periscope, became anxious for the first time.

[Panel 15]

Miyazaki (a pig as usual) wonders when it will all end.

４ヶ月 かかって まだ ほんの 序ノ口
4-kagetsu kakate mada honno jo-no-kuchi
  It's taken 4 months; still only a beginning.

「まさに 連載 そのものが 泥沼化 し つつ あります」
"Masani rensai sono mono ga doronumaka shi tsutsu arimasu"
  "The series itself certainly is getting bogged down."

「イカン  コマッタ  この日だけで 四回 攻撃が あるのだ     ヤベ・・」
"Ikan           Komatta      Kono hi dake de yonkai kougeki ga aru no da
Yabe.."
  "This is bad.  This is a problem.  Just on this day, there were four
attacks.  Ouch...."
