As Carius' Tiger tanks lie in hiding next to a war-torn farmhouse, a
barrage of illumination flares reveal their position.

A squadron of Russian fighter-bombers release their payload.

  Every night the Soviet flyers came, scattering bombs everywhere.

A World War I era Russian biplane climbs away after dropping a single bomb,
which impacts near the farmhouse.

いやがらせ 爆撃も 追加された 。

  They were meant to be annoying.

Carius inspects a bomb crater that has quickly filled with water.  Pictured
directly below, he discusses the situation with another soldier.

「またでかい穴を...」

  "Another big hole..."

おかげで カリウスの 仕事が 増えた。
Okagede Kariusu no shigoto ga fueta.
  Thanks to it, the work for Carius increased.

爆弾の穴を すべて チェックして歩いた。
Bakudan no ana o subete chekku shite aruita.
  He walked around, checking the bombed hole.

泥炭地は すぐ水が にじみ出てくる。
Deitanchi wa sugu mizu ga nijimi detekuru.
  In peat land, the water seeps out immediately.

戦場を 自由に 走りまわる ためには、穴の位置を 覚えておか なければ ナラナ
イ。
Senjou o jiyuu ni hashirimawaru tameniwa, ana no ichi o oboete okanakereba
naranai.
  He has to remember the locations of the holes in order to run around the
battlefield freely.

Two Tiger tanks on the move leave only dust in their wake.

きなくさい...。  勤勉な カリウスは すぐ動く。

  He smells something burning....  The hard-working Carius moves quickly.

「踏切りの ギリまで いくぞ！！」
"Fumikiri no giri made iku zo!!"
  "We'll go to the edge of the crossing!!"

Carius sticks his head out from the turret to get a clear view of the
terrain ahead.

Through his binoculars, Carius spies a Russian tank hiding in the
marshlands.

「いたっ！！  戦車だ。  やっぱり」
"Ita!!  Sensha da.  Yappari"
  "There it is!!  It's a tank.  Just as I thought."

[Panel 11]

Carius retreats back into the relative safety of the tank just as a hail of
bullets strike the turret.  Whew!!

ロシア兵は すぐ反応する。
Roshia-hei wa sugu hannou suru.
  The Russian soldiers reacted quickly.

As Carius flees the scene, shells impact all around the speeding tanks.

Carius does not look too happy as he ponders the arrival of Russian armor.

  "(The Russians) brought tanks - that's the proof that they're going to
attack our sector."

Carius runs toward a farmhouse as shells find their mark near a Tiger tank.

From within the farmhouse, Carius observes Russian troop movements while a
soldier sitting nearby comments on our hero's aroma.

「キャタピラの音の他に、よくエンジンの音がきこえますぜ。  かけ声も」
"Kyatapira no oto no hoka ni, yoku enjin no oto ga kikoemasu ze.  Kakegoe
mo"
  "Besides the sound of the caterpillar treads, the sound of the engine was
audible.  Shouting, too."

この間、歩兵達は 農家の中を 補強し、床下に 穴を 掘り、土の室を トーチカに

  During this time, the infantrymen were working - reinforcing the interior
of the farmhouse, digging holes under the floor, creating a tochka from the
earthen cellar.

Pictured beneath an aerial view of their position, Carius makes suggestions
to the infantry officer.

A German soldier vainly tries to dig a foxhole as it fills with water.

たしかに 泥炭の低湿地では すぐ水が わいて来たりした

  Certainly, in the low-lying swampy peat land, the water came out easily.

ロシア兵ならともかく ドイツ兵には 耐えがたかった
Roshia-hei nara tomokaku Doitsu-hei niwa taegatakatta
  It would be acceptable to the Russian soldiers, but for the German
soldiers it was unbearable.

Buried deep in the side of a hill, Carius walks through an antechamber on
his way to a briefing with Major Haase.

Major Haase informs Carius of their dire situation.

カラッケツだ。  なし。  ナイの。  どこもかしこも ヤバイのだ！」

  "Tanks are moving around everywhere.  I know that.

Major Haase and Carius are pictured standing on a map of the battlefield,
which illustrates the movements of the Russian forces.  The situation
doesn't look good.

った。
Roshia-gun ga Doitsu-gawa no usu~i sensen no doko o toppa shiyou to
neratteiru ka ga souten datta.
  At what place the Russian army was planning to break through the thin
German front was the point at issue.

「特に この突出部が ヤバイのだ。  ものすごく ヤバイ」

  "Especially this protrusion point is dangerous.  Staggeringly dangerous."

The German forces lay low in foxholes and trenches as Russian artillery
fire begins to fall.

de ganbatteita.
  The main force of Haase's regiment was doing their best [to hold out] at
the low hill sticking out between east and west.

二個大隊.....  でも、実質は 一個中隊 ほどで

  Two battalions.....  but in reality they were only one company.

Our beleaguered hero Otto Carius stands toe to toe against an angry Major
Haase.

カリウスは しつこい男だ
Kariusu wa shitsukou otoko da
  Carius is a stubborn man.

毎晩のように 出かけていった。
Maiban no youni dekakete itta.
  Every night he went out there.

「せめて タコツボを 掘るように」
"Semete takotsubo o horu youni"
  "At least try digging foxholes."

クドクド

  (repeatedly)

「だから 手が ないの！  貧乏なの！！  せめてあと 一個中隊が ほしい...

A lone Tiger tank stands watch as Russian bombs impact in the distance.
Destroyed railroad tracks nearby stand as evidence of earlier attacks.

その間も 早朝のモグラタタキは つづいていた。
Sono aida mo souchou no mogura tataki wa tsuzuiteita.
  During this time, the Russians continued their early-morning bombing
attacks.

Carius observes a Russian nighttime bombardment off in the distance as he
is perched atop his Tiger tank in the farm compound.  A soldier approaches.

夜も 相変わらずだった。
Yoru mo aikawarazu datta.
  Even at night, that was as usual.

German soldiers line up for chow next to a Tiger tank in the farm compound.

Carius looks skyward as the sound of an approaching aircraft breaks the
silence.

An approaching Russian bomber is seen from below.

German soldiers are thrown in all directions as a bomb impacts next to a
Tiger tank.

The Russian bomber climbs into the nighttime sky as it leaves a fiery path
of destruction in its wake.

  That Russian flight scattered bombs, hitting even his own position.

The still bodies of two dead German soldiers lay next to the treads of a
Tiger tank.

虎は 無事だったが 二名の隊員が 殺された。
Tora wa buji datta ga ni-mei no taiin ga korosareta.
  The Tiger was safe, but two members of the unit were killed.

Carius, eyes not yet fully open, emerges from a bunker after being rudely
awakened by a soldier.

その夜は 悪い事だらけだった。
Sono yoru wa warui koto darake datta.
  That night was full of bad things.

Carius and his men hurriedly climb into their tank as raging fires consume
the nearby farmhouses.

  "All three farmhouses are burning."

At the scene of the burning farmhouses, a bomb impacts and hurls a German
soldier into the air.  Other soldiers hit the dirt trying to escape the
ensuing firestorm.

Carius, wide-eyed, stares at the carnage before him.

ロシア軍は 焼夷弾を 使ったのだ。

  The Russian army used incendiary bombs.

  "That's why they should have made foxholes..."

Bathed in the orange glow of the farmhouse flames, Carius and his Tiger
tank move out.

「ゆっくり進め。  ロシア軍の攻撃が あるかもしれない」

  "Proceed slowly.  It may be the Russian army's offensive."

「歩兵は ひどいことに なっているだろう。  あの少年兵たちも...」
"Hohei wa hidoi koto ni natteiru darou.  Ano shounen-heitachi mo..."
  "I guess the infantrymen were hit badly.  Even those young
infantrymen..."

Carius and his two Tiger tanks hold their ground near the burning
farmhouses.

  Carius and his men's 2 Tigers waited behind the fire.

Carius and his crew watch and wait inside the tank.

ロシア軍の砲撃は やんだ。
Roshia-gun no hougeki wa yanda.
  The Russian bombardment stopped.

攻撃は ない。
Kougeki wa nai.
  There was no attack.

歩兵達が 気に なるが、火が 消えるのを 待つしかない。
Hohei-tachi ga ki ni naru ga, hi ga kieru no o matsushikanai.
  He worried about the infantrymen, but the only thing he could do was wait
until the fire went out.

Amongst the charred remains of the burned out farmhouses, German
infantrymen signal for help to an approaching Tiger tank.

A large number of wounded infantrymen hitch a ride on Carius's Tiger tank.

  He transported the severely wounded men to the Kinderheim.

German infantrymen position logs over the stone foundation of one of the
destroyed farmhouses.

おどろくべきは ドイツ歩兵のねばりだった。
Odoroku beki wa Doitsu-hohei no nebari datta.
  The surprising thing was the persistence of the German infantrymen.

彼等は 焼跡を 急拠陣地に つくりかえたのだ。
Karera wa yakeato o kyuukyo jinchi ni tsukuri kaeta no da.
  They transformed the ruins into an encampment in a hurry.

この時には 各拠点の中隊の兵数は 一O ~ 一二名に なってしまっていた。
Kono toki niwa kakukyoten no chuutai no heisuu wa juu ~ juu ni-mei ni natte
shimatteita.
  At this time the number of soldiers in squadrons in each base numbered
10-12 men.

  The foundations of Estonian houses were made of rock.

Major Haase screams into a radiophone as Carius meekly approaches from the
rear.  And he thought it was dangerous at the front!!

そのねばりを 支えたのは この人だった。
Sono nebari o sasaeta no wa kono hito datta.
  This man (Haase) was behind that persistence.

「そうだ  援軍はない   へばりつけ  歩兵の花道だ
"Sou da       Engun wa nai    Hebaritsuke    Hohei no hanamichi da
弾薬は 戦車で とどける」

  "That's right.  No reinforcements.  Stick to it.  Defend your position.
  We'll deliver ammunition by tank."

Carius in his Tiger pulls up to one of the occupied, burned-out farmhouses.
  The only structure that remains intact is the stove and chimney.

三つの拠点は 廃虚１ー３と 呼ばれるようになった。
Mittsu no kyoten wa haikyo 1-3 to yobareru youni natta.
  The three bases came to be called ruins 1-3.

廃虚１（ 元農家１）

Carius directs his men as they carry supplies.

  The work for Carius increased again.

  "Shovels?  Water?"

「あと無線器と キャンデー」
"Ato musenki to kyandee"
  "Also radiophone and candy."

「そっ、子供が 多いの」
"So, kodomo ga ooi no"
  "Right, there are many children."

  "And candles."

A Tiger racing at full speed narrowly escapes an exploding Russian shell.

貴重な虎の使い方としては リスクが 多すぎるが
Kichouna tora no tsukai-kata to shite wa risuku ga oosugiru ga
  To use the precious Tiger this way was too risky, but...

「しかたがないのだ」

  "It can't be helped."

Carius, surrounded by swarming lice, has looked better.  How much longer
can he last?

疲労から 来るつかれは 限界に 近づいて来た。
Hirou kara kuru tsukare wa genkai ni chikazuite kita.
  The exhaustion from fatigue was coming close to the limit.

「もう シラミも かんじないノダ」
"Mou shirami mo kanjinai no da"
  "I don't feel the lice anymore..."

過労、寝不足、不潔、座骨神経痛、ロクマク炎... etc.
Karou, Nebusoku, Fuketsu, Zakotsu-shinkeitsuu, Rokumaku-en... etc.
  Overwork, Lack of sleep, Dirtiness, Sciatica, Pleurisy... etc.

From within one of the farmhouse bunkers, Carius looks out over the
snow-covered peat lands.

  The Russian army became extremely quiet.

  It was a sign that they were ready.

Under clearing skies, two Tiger tanks traverse the peat lands.

運が 良かった。  二輌の虎に 交代してもらうことに なった
Un ga yokatta.  Ni-ryou no tora ni koutai shitemorau koto ni natta
  He was lucky.  As it turned out, two Tigers were sent as replacements.

「フロに 入りたい」
"Furo ni hairitai"
  "I want to take a bath."

Tank repair engineers pop the hood on a Tiger tank as Carius and his crew
look on, and rejoice in their findings.

A smiling Carius holds a plate of....pork loin!!  Pigs as cannibals - who
would have thought such a thing possible?

目の前のごちそうは 食え！！  兵隊は そうしたものだ。
Me no mae no gochisou wa kue!!  Heitai wa sou shita mono da.
  Eat the feast in front of your eyes!!!  The soldiers always did so.

いつ死ぬか わからないのだカラ
Itsu shinu ka wakaranai no da kara
  Because they don't know when they will die.

Carius and his men shed their lice-infested uniforms, take in a sauna, and
"sweat like pigs."

Carius receives some bad news via radiophone while two skulls mock him from
above.

Carius mentally visualizes the conversation he previously had with the
obtuse commanders of the two relief tanks, then imagines the result of
their pig-headedness.  Standing next to Carius are his men (where are their
clothes??!!), looking very forlorn as they sigh in resignation.

その二輌は ひきつぎを 守らなかったのだ。
Sono ni-ryou wa hikitsugi o mamoranakatta no da.
  Those two tanks didn't follow Carius's orders.

「ああで  こうで」
"Aa de         kou de"
  "Blah, blah..."

「迫撃砲の発射音が したら  すぐ動かないと やられるぞ」
"Hakugekihou no hassha-on ga shitara  sugu ugokanai to yarareru zo"
  "If you hear the sound of mortar fire, move quickly, or you'll be
damaged!"

The two "replacement" Tiger tanks depart apologetically as Carius looks on
from the turret of his battered old tank.

  At 7:00 in the morning, while it was still very dark, he took over their
assignment.
