Once again, I call the tree-like red-eyed leader of the Japanese Shinma "osa" (since that's what Miyu calls him...). ------------------------------------------------------------------------ (187,1) [New Vampire Miyu: Dreams Are the Doors of Sleep] Flashback: The osa stirs in the Dark as Miyu's mother holds baby Miyu in her arms, rocking her back to sleep. (188,1) osa: --There. I can hear the cry of a infant. An infant of the vampires. The guardian...... How long {that bloodline} has slept. (188,2) Mother: It is not certain that you will Awaken {and become a vampire}. "Please stay this way." "Aa..." My precious little girl...... (189,1) osa: Hurry and Awaken, o blood of the vampire. Place the renegade shinma in the Darkness... (189,2) Miyu: The leader of the Japanese Shinma calls me-- (189,3) osa: Isn't your throat dry? Haven't you come to desire blood? Flashback: Miyu's family. (189,4) mother: "Stay with us as a human and live out your life in happiness..." Flashback: Miyu holds the cold, stiff body of her little bird. Flashback: Larva and Lemures watch the teenage Miyu from a stand of trees. (190,1) Miyu: Larva, who came with Lemures from the West... (190,2) Lemures: "How long are you just going to watch? Larva. Before she Awakens..." (190,3) (190,4) Lemures: You must kill her before the blood in her body burns red {Awakens}. Larva: "I am Larva." I must put your blood to sleep {before it Awakens}... I should have done this when I first found you. Miyu: ...gave me eternity {by Awakening my blood}. Flashback: Miyu biting Larva for the first time. (191,1) Miyu: Those beautiful, sharp nails that were supposed to suppress me Awoke the blood inside me... Flashback: Miyu's conquest of Larva. (191,2) Miyu: Lemures attacked me in order to reclaim Larva-- (191,3) Miyu: Larva led him... Flashback: Larva slashing Lemures, who is burning in Miyu's flame. (191,4) Miyu: ...to the Dark-- Miyu standing alone in darkness. (192,1) Miyu: --Vampire Miyu. Guardian of the Dark. Miyu speaks to a young boy, a look of sadness and compassion on her face. (192,2) Miyu: "If you so desire, I will give you everlasting dreams." (192,2) (192,3) Miyu: "In exchange for your...warm blood." (193,1) Miyu: Sleep well. (193,3) Miyu: "You are beautiful...Let's seal (your beauty) away, just as you are." (193,3) (193,4) {body falling to the ground} The boy collapses, two small punctures on his neck. (And, presumably, another sphere appears in Miyu's forest.) The sun shines through a stand of tall trees. (193,7) Miyu: "Kami...kakushi {hidden from the gods}." An old woman squats at the edge of a flower bed. She methodically snips the stems and places the blooms in a nearby bucket of water, all the while talking to a young girl who stands beside her. (194,1) woman: "That's what everyone calls it." Miyu: "Hmm." (194,2) {snip!} woman: "Starting from about ten years ago, with two cases...... no, three cases where children were missing." (194,3) woman: "Anyway, they were murdered, without demands for ransom." (194,4) woman: "They said they weren't accidents, anyway. Two children disappeared." (194,5) Miyu: "Two?" (194,6) (194,6) woman: "One was found a month later. But he couldn't say why he disappeared." Miyu: "Hmm?" (194,7) woman: "He was always vacant and wouldn't reply to questions. He would only laugh as if he were happy. It was strange." (195,1) Miyu: "That boy isn't still in this sanatorium, is he......?" Behind Miyu, we see a two-story dormitory-like wooden building set in a wooded campus. Beyond that is a range of low, forest-covered mountains. For the first time, the old woman turns to look at her and smiles widely. (195,2) woman: "Oh, you're a newcomer here, missy?" Then, looking down, not so approvingly: (195,3) woman: "Going barefoot like that...isn't that bad for your health?" Miyu: "I don't mind." (195,4) Miyu: "So, where is Masashi now?" (195,5) woman: "Because he was the son of a very rich family...Wha-? How did you know his name?" Oops! Miyu giggles and puts her finger to her lips. (195,5) {giggle} Miyu: "That's a secret." (195,6) woman: "That boy looked delicate to me as I went in and out of the grounds." (195,7) woman: "Now that his father is at work overseas..." (195,8) woman: "...and his wife is with him as well..." (196,1) woman: "...Masa was taken from here to a villa {and hidden away} in the heart of the mountains, with a private nurse attending him." Miyu: "Nurse?" (196,2) woman: "He suffers from severe anemia. It's sad..." (196,3) woman: "The physician sometimes calls on him to give him a transfusion. But his health hasn't changed at all." (196,3) {grunt of effort} The old woman slowly stands with her last handful of blooms. (196,4) woman: "Sometimes I even take him flowers..." (196,5) Miyu: "Hmm..." (196,6) woman: "...but they do't let me see him very often." (196,7) woman: "Who knows, maybe it would be better if you didn't go. He doesn't even notice when someone visits him. But what a beautiful child." (197,1) woman: "He's just as beautiful as he was in the past. He doesn't seem to age very much. It's a little strange, isn't it? Eh...?" The old woman looks up, sensing that she is alone. (197,2) woman: "Miss?" She looks at the nearby tree-line, then all around. (197,3) woman: "Oh, where did she go? But-- she was here just a moment ago." Miyu waits in darkness, sitting on air. (197,4) Miyu: Larva... (197,5) Miyu: "You found the villa?" Larva: --Yes. Miyu holds her chin thoughtfully. (198,1) Miyu: "He was there?" (198,2) Larva: "Yes." Miyu rolls her eyes as Larva approaches her from behind. (198,3) Miyu: (annoyed) "Oh, really...... he's making us worried. You know?" (198,4) Larva: "Miyu, there is the smell of a shinma in his house." Miyu leans back and playfully reaches for Larva's mask. (198,5) Miyu: "Not surprising." (198,6) Miyu: "He attracts insects {parasites} so easily because he's so beautiful." (198,6) (198,6) Miyu: "Surely it's not much of a shinma." Miyu tilts her head back and looks Larva in the eyes as he holds her. (199,1) Miyu: "As long as we're here, we might as well do some ``work'' {shinma-hunting}." (199,2) Miyu: (smiling cutely) "Isn't that right, Larva!" (199,3) Larva: "--Yes." Outside of a bedroom window in a private villa, the full moon shines brightly. A young man, bed-ridden, watches the window slowly open of its own accord. (199,4) {giggling} (199,5) (199,6) A girl floats just outside of his window, silhouetted by the full moon. (200,1) Miyu: "Good evening, Masashi." (200,2) (200,3) Masashi: "--Miyu. It's Miyu, isn't it?" She floats down onto his sickbed. (200,4) Miyu: "That's right. You seem to be enjoying yourself." Masashi: "Of course, thanks to you." (201,1) Miyu: "Even if you don't notice other people, you notice me, don't you. That's because I..." She strokes his throat intimately. (201,2) Miyu: "...am special, aren't I?" (201,3) Masashi: "Oh, yes." (201,4) {door slamming open} (201,5) nurse: "W...who are you!?" (201,6) nurse: "What are you doing?" (202,1) Miyu: "Masashi is mine." (202,2) nurse: "You're a child from the nearby sanatorium? You're even still in your nightclothes...!" (202,3) Miyu: "And just who are you?" (202,4) nurse: "Me...? I'm the nurse who's taking care of him! How rude!" (203,1) (203,1) Miyu: (giggling) "--Well, Larva, I wonder if that's true?" (202,2) nurse: "WHAT! What's so funny!" (202,3) Larva: "You're the one who should know that the best." The nurse spins to face Larva, who has come up behind her. (203,3) (203,4) Pointing his upraised index finger at her forehead, Larva freezes the nurse in place. (203,4) nurse: "You (two)..." (203,6) nurse: "Aa...aaah! I just wanted to stay by him {Masashi} and watch him." (204,1) Miyu lights a fireball. (204,1) Miyu: "Because he is beautiful, of course......" (to Larva) "I was wondering why you weren't coming back. It was because you had caught (the shinma)." (204,2) Miyu: "But how disappointing." (204,3) Miyu: "His body is going to start to fail soon." (204,4) Miyu: "I'll have to stop this quickly." (204,5) Miyu: "And now..." (204,6) Miyu: "...you're to return--" Miyu flings the fireball. (205,1) Miyu: "--to the Dark......" (205,4) (205,5) Miyu: "You must have been comfortable {here}. The doctor would bring you blood..." (205,6) Miyu: "...but I won't give you Masashi." (206,2) Miyu: "Bye-bye!" (206,3) (206,4) As the flames die out, a sphere appears in Miyu's hand. (206,5) Miyu: "Masashi, this time it's really ``good night.''" (206,6) Masashi: "That (sphere) is pretty..." (207,1) Miyu: "Isn't it?" (207,2) Miyu: "You like it?" Masa: "Uh huh!" (207,4) {wind blowing drapes} (207,5) (207,6) As the sphere -- now containing Masashi's tiny figure -- appears in Miyu's forest, we see his dream of being reunited with his parents. Miyu regards her spheres thoughtfully. (208,1) Miyu: "They're all inside these happy dreams I've given to them." (208,2) Miyu: "Masashi looks so happy." (208,4) Miyu: "Larva... peoples' happiness is so selfish and empty, isn't it? The smiling parents inside of (his dream) have, in reality, left him and gone overseas..." (209,1) Larva: "And yet, Miyu, his parents surely love him, wherever they are..." (209,2) Miyu: "Hmm..." (209,3) Miyu: When the vampire blood in me first Awakened... Larva: "They each have their own style of loving. Human parents seem to be that type of being..." (209,4) Miyu: "Parents...Hm." Flashback: Miyu, her vampire blood newly Awakened, runs up to her mother. (209,4) Miyu: That's why my throat is dry-- (209,5) Mother: --Come to me, Miyu. As your mother... Miyu grabs hold of one of her mother's sleeves, panic-stricken. Miyu: "Mother." Her mother's other hand holds a long, glittering knife, hidden behind her back. Mother: ...I will give you the final act of love. (209,6) Miyu: "What shall I do? My...throat is parched for blood..." Unable to save her daughter from the vampire's fate, or even to save herself, Miyu's mother weeps and drops the knife into the grass. (210,1) Mother: "Miyu..." I love you. (210,2) Miyu: (To Larva, in the present) "Larva--" "My throat is dry." --That day, a knife fell from my mother's hand... (210,3) Miyu: "I want...blood." Miyu's mother bends down; Miyu wraps her arms around her mother's neck. (211,1) Miyu: ...when, with these fangs and this mouth, I drank my mother's blood. Tears run down Miyu's face as she finishes the story. She buries her face in Larva's cloak. (211,2) Miyu: "She had planned to pierce my heart with that knife." (211,3) Miyu: I truly became...a vampire. (211,4) Miyu: Even though I want to forget it, I cannot completely erase it -- the time I was a human being... Larva places his arms around Miyu; first to comfort her, then to help her as she wraps her arms around his neck. Larva: "Help yourself to my blood, Miyu..." (212,1) Miyu: "Larva...did I do a bad thing to Masashi?" Larva: "No." She pulls herself up as his cloak falls away from his throat. Larva: "Because he wanted it that way."
