Maison Ikkoku - (c) Rumiko Takahashi Translated from the Hunter Comics Chinese manga by Andrew Chen, 08/93 Revised 11/93 Volume 11, part 10 -- "Memai" (Chinese manga vol. 14, part 1) (This part corresponds to the first half of TV ep. 66.) (background: Kyoko has told Yagami's teacher that the tutoring from Godai- sensei isn't helping her. After a talk with her teacher, Yagami declares war on Kyoko.) Yagami is at home, working an all-nighter. Her mother enters with snacks. Mother You still haven't gone to sleep? Mother Working hard is good, Mother but be careful not to ruin your health. Yagami I'm not! flashback: Teacher: Yagami, I'm really concerned about you. It seems like the tutor you have now isn't doing any good. Yagami [All I need to do is bring up my grades, then things will be fine.] Yagami [She calls this being "concerned about" me?!] Yagami [The widow wants to cut apart the feelings between me and Godai...] Yagami [I will not lose!] The next day at school, Yagami is showing signs of sleepless nights... Teacher These are the results from the last practice exam. Teacher ... . ... . Ibuki Yagami. ... . Yagami (picks up her results) Hmmm... Friend Yagami, how'd you do? Yagami (a tired smile, and the "A-OK" sign.) At Ikkoku-kan, Kyoko is sweeping the front walk. Yagami arrives. She looks like a zombie. Yagami Kanrinin-san! Kyoko Yagami, can I help you? Yagami Yes... Yagami There's something I want to show you. Yagami digs into her bookbag, hands her grade sheet to Kyoko. Kyoko .... Yagami My grades have improved a lot. Kyoko Why are you showing this to me? Yagami Weren't you worried? Yagami You went and complained to our advisor, but now there's nothing you can say! Kyoko ("grrrr") .... Kyoko Yagami, you look like you've lost weight. Kyoko Have you been doing a lot of all-nighters? Yagami Right. Just to see Godai sensei. Kyoko [You're really shameless!] Godai returns. Godai I'm back- Godai sees the two and makes a quick turn, but doesn't escape. Yagami You just got back, and you're going out again? Kyoko Her grades have improved. Yagami (big smile) You said it! Yagami This way I can continue to have a tutor. Yagami Wonderfullll... The all-nighters take their toll. Yagami passes out, into Godai's arms. Kyoko, standing behind Yagami, is about to explote... Kyoko "!" Kyoko What are you doing, Yagami?! Yagami doesn't respond... G & K [huh?] Kyoko puts Yagami in the manager's room, then they talk in the hall. Kyoko Looks like she wasn't sleeping enough. Kyoko She's sound asleep now. Godai I'm sorry to trouble you. Kyoko It's okay. Kyoko Being young is really scary. Kyoko Sometimes you'll risk your life for anything. Godai It's probably something to do with relationships... Yagami wakes up. She looks a lot better now. Yagami Yaaawn... That was plenty of sleep. She goes out to the hall. Yagami I'm sorry for bothering you. I'll go back now. Godai I'll go with you to the station, in case you pass out again. Yagami Wow! Really? Godai (to Kyoko) Is it okay? Kyoko Obviously its okay. Yagami You don't need to ask her about everything!! Nighttime at Ikkoku-kan. Kyoko is in her room, knitting. Kyoko [I can't be like this,] Kyoko [revealing my feelings that bluntly.] Kyoko [When kids of Yagami's age act like that,] Kyoko [It must be love...] Kyoko [Before...] flashback: Narr Everybody saw me at Souichiro's side. Students I can't figure out what Kyoko is thinking. Narr Everybody seemed hostile to me. Kyoko [Enemies over love.] Kyoko [This must be a joke. How could we become enemies over love?] The next day, Yagami buys a cake... Yagami [Now, they have no reason to chase me out.] Yagami [It's time to figure out how to chase away the widow.] ... that night she goes to Ikkoku-kan. Voice Tonight's homework is... Yotsuya ...self-study. Yotsuya (adjusting the TV) If you don't understand something, ask Godai. Godai What? Yagami Ok, Yotsuya-sensei. Yotsuya is watching TV. Godai is making origami one side of his room, Yagami is at the center table. TV [How can her parents be like that?] Godai [Really...] Godai [How can this be happening?!] Yagami Godai-sensei... Godai Go ask Yotsuya-sensei. Yagami But- Godai I'm telling you, I'm not your teacher anymore. Godai Stop calling me Godai-sensei. Yagami Oh. Really? Then I'll call you... Yagami Godai-oniisan... (*1) The words HIT Godai by surprise. Kyoko enters with snacks. Kyoko I brought you a snack. Godai Kanrinin-san, you didn't need to go through that trouble. Yagami You don't need to be troubled any more. Tea and sweets... Yagami takes a thermos and cake out from her bag. Yagami I already brought them. Yagami You don't need to come and bring us stuff. Kyoko simmering. She gives snacks to Godai. Kyoko Have some. Godai (takes the food) Thank you. Yagami (gives her own food to Godai) Have some!! Godai is stuck, holding two sets of snacks. Godai (cheerful smile) This much... Godai This is really a treat... Yagami (furious) Stop saying that kind of nonsense! (*2) Kyoko [Godai, make things clear to her!] The rest of the looney squad enters. Yotsuya Everyone, please enjoy yourselves. Akemi Wow! What a lot of cakes! What good luck! (*3) Ichinose Interesting... Yotsuya takes both of Godai's pieces of cake. He finishes both in one big gulp. Yagami HEY! Kyoko (grrr....) Godai (uh oh...) The squad gather around the table and eat. Ichinose What's wrong with them? Yotsuya One male, two females, this is what happens. Yagami (to Kyoko) You really do like Godai-sensei, am I right? Godai Yagami, what in the world are you saying?! Yagami Does that mean you aren't? The others watch the show. Yotsuya (to the others) What do you think the result will be? Nikaido I don't know. Ichinose Seeing the situation, there is still competition between the two of them. Yagami Yes you do! Otherwise you wouldn't be bothering us. Kyoko stands up quietly and leaves. Ichinose She ran away. Godai stands up to follow her. Yagami Sensei! As Yagami gets up, Ichinose grabs her. Ichinose Forget it, forget it! Yagami Don't stop me! I don't want the two of them to be together. Yotsuya It's nothing serious. Ichinose (smile) Don't worry, nothing will happen. Kyoko goes down the stairs, Godai follows. Godai Kanrinin-san! Godai Don't take a child's words so seriously... Kyoko facing forward, Godai standing behind her. Kyoko I'm sorry... I'm was really acting childish... Godai Uh... Don't... Kyoko The opponent is a high-school student... Kyoko Why am I being this serious? Godai Uh... Godai Kanrinin-san... She turns around. Godai looks very compassionate. Godai Kanrinin-san. Kyoko "!" Kyoko turns Goddai's head. The others are at the top of the stairs, watching them. Kyoko (moving away) --that's all that happened. Godai Uh... Yotsuya Don't mind us. Please continue! Ichinose Why do you worry so much about other people observing you? Godai [Sure enough, she DOES like me...] Yagami [He's like a kid, worrying this much about people observing him.] Kyoko (sitting in her room, puzzled) Why were they doing that? Notes: (1) "Godai big-brother" or "elder brother Godai", implying closeness between them. (2) Thanks to Harold Melanson (hgm@aspen.cray.com) for a good explanation: This is a pun. He says, "KEKI ga ii ne.", "CAKE is nice, isn't it?" but the tiny kanji above KEKI reads KEI KI "KEI KI ga ii" is an idiom that could mean, "What good luck!" or, "Times are good!", or "This is really a treat"... (3) Akemi makes the same pun here, KEKI, KEIKI. -- hgm (fin)
