No matter how horrible the things I saw, no matter how much I was scolded by my parents, once I stepped into my room, I would feel as if I was protected. It was a very special place, all my own. In that room, the most especially mysterious thing was my futon. The futon that was warm, and had an odour of the sun. I felt as if there was something like an invisible "kekkai" (="barrier") covered by that small futon. 62 Once I was in the futon, I had a definite feeling of security as if nothing could enter, not even bad things. In other words, I felt as if I would break this kekkai if I left the futon even just a little bit. All the while, I tried very hard to make sure that no part of my body poked out between the upper futon (quilt) and the lower futon (mattress). The room which protected me when the lights were on became a nightmare the moment the lights were turned off. 63 The stains on the ceiling. The gaps between the shelves. The shadows cast on the window. "Scary." Scared and scared, I still believed strongly in the kekkai of the futon. It's alright once I was in this kekkai. Nothing would happen once I was in this kekkai. I had to be sure about this. 64 If my foot or anything went outside the kekkai, it would definitely be cut off by "something". If I put my head outside the kekkai, my head would be chopped off. "Scary." 65 When I was about 8, I fell off a tree and broke my leg. I was sent to stay in hospital until I got better. I couldn't understand the more difficult things but to me, having to stay in hospital for a long time was unreasonable. Behind my mother's and the nurses' back, I walked on my crutches and wandered inside the hospital. Pure white walls everywhere. Rooms with beds that looked the same, standing side by side. And there was "her". 66 Long brown hair. Looking like the princess who took her prince with her long hair that my mother told me about. I was fascinated by this young girl whom I saw by chance. Surrounded by the "white" of the hospital, there was no feeling of reality about this girl who had light coloured eyes. She really looked like a princess to me. A princess ... a princess who was captured in the hospital. 67 I felt as if I were the prince and stubbornly believed that I would take the princess out of this hospital. So from then, I went to see her everyday. Even though I could not say anything to her and just looked at her, I was very happy. One night I had a dream. It was a dream about that girl being attacked by "something". I didn't know what "something" was but it was scary enough, and I woke up being scared. 68 The hospital rooms in the middle of the night further horrified me. Before realising it, I ran out of my room. I wanted to make sure that she was alright. I just wanted to make sure, and I was running in the dark long corridor which normally I wouldn't dare to walk because they scared me. She was in her normal room. Moonlight shone faintly on the white bed through the window. At that time, 69 I nearly cried out when I saw her left hand hanging out of her bed. You cannot hang your hand out. The bed is a kekkai. That's why you cannot put anything of your body out of it. If you do, it would be chopped off by "something". 70 I wanted to put her hand back into the kekkai. But I couldn't do it. Her face shone by the moonlight looked as if she was dead. White face like a sheet of paper; the same kind of white as the hospital. All of a sudden, I was engulfed in terror. 71 "Scary" I was running. With a speed that was faster than when I came through the long corridor. I was running, driven away from the horror. I plunged into my bed and was trembling from head to toe. 72 And then I prayed. Hoping that she would hide her hand back into the futon soon. Hoping that she would put it back into the kekkai. Hoping that "something" would not have noticed her left hand. The next morning, I went to her room quietly. The hospital in the morning seemed to be completely different from the night, dazzling under the reflection of sunlight. What happened yesterday seemed to be a dream. The bright "white" took away the feeling of reality from yesterday's horror. She must be alright. No, in the first place, what happened was just a dream. I ran. 73 I saw her "left hand". On her left wrist, there was no "hand". I cried non-stop. I cried for the fact that because I didn't have the courage to return her left hand back into the kekkai, and made her lose her left hand. 74 I recall seeing "white" and the "left hand" that she lost even now. 27 May 94 22:13 Cynthia Ma: ?
