That's what he meant! 2 [A tight shot of what I *think* is an incense burner used for mosquito repellant-type incense.] 3 Grandpa: [sipping from his glass] Oh, that's right. Speaking of snow... There's this story... 4 Grandpa: I guess it was something like 20 years ago. 5 [A view of a forest.] cicada FX: 6 [A bird lies on the ground.] hawk FX: 7 [A young man, bearing a stunning resemblance to Kyousuke, stops to render aid.] photographer: How sad. Are you hurt? narration: Around the time of the summer festival, a young man from the city turned up in the village. 8 [He ties a shoelace around the bird's injured leg.] photographer: Now it's all right! --------------------------------------------------- p 224 (76) 1 [As the bird flies off, he looks down, off-panel.] hawk FX: photographer: It's going to be a bit awkward to walk, I guess. 2 [Isolated shot of his left shoe. It's lacking a shoelace.] 3 [Overhead view of Kyousuke's grandparents' home. The bird comes flying back.] 4 [It lands on its outdoor perch. A girl standing nearby turns towards it.] hawk FX: daughter: Oh, Tsubasa. 5 daughter: Your leg... Is it hurt? 6 [Tight shot of the bird's leg.] daughter: [off] A shoelace...? 7 [Our first good look at her face--she looks identical to Madoka.] daughter: You were treated... Who on earth could it be? Such a kind-hearted person. 8 [Back in present-time, Kyousuke looks back over his shoulder with a forced smile at Madoka and Hikaru, who look back at him in puzzlement.] narration: When listening to an old story, anyone would imagine substituting in his own face and those of familiar people. --------------------------------------------------- p 225 (77) 1 [He stands on a bridge with camera in hand.] narration: Meanwhile, the young man was taking pictures at the village lake. camera FX: photographer: Hmm, nice scenery! 2 [He looks up in surprise at something off-panel.] photographer: Ah! 3 [It's Tsubasa's beautiful mistress, playing in the water with 3 other girls.] daughter FX: daughter: Kya! Kya! 4 photographer: [blushing] So cute... crows-in-background FX: narration: It seems he had fallen in love at first sight... 5 narration: But this innocent young man had never called upon a young lady! photographer: [aiming his camera] At least a picture... 6 [The most homely of the four girls comes looming into view, blocking his view of the daughter.] camera FX: [off] girl FX: --------------------------------------------------- p 226 (78) 1 [He leans way out over the railing of the rope bridge he's on.] photographer: A little bit more. That girl...! photographer FX: 2 [His pov thru the viewfinder of his camera. She smiles.] photographer: [off] Great! camera FX: 3 narration: He leaned forward too far and fell headlong into the water! photographer: Wahhh!! 4 [The four girls rush over to the unconscious man, lying on his back in the water.] daughter: Hey, someone's drowning! 5 [She takes a good look at his left shoe...] daughter: Ah! 6 [...and visualizes the shoelace on her bird's injured leg.] daughter: This person is... 7 narration: And when the young man regained consciousness... photographer: [opening his eyes] Hmm? --------------------------------------------------- p 227 (79) 1 [View pans back to show him sitting up in bedding inside a room. The daughter kneels before him.] photographer: Ow-ow-ow-ouch. daughter: Don't overdo it--your leg is injured... 2 photographer: Ah! (This girl is...) 3 daughter: The one who you treated... Is a bird that I'm raising... Thanks to you he can fly again. 4 daughter: [blushing] Now, in return, I'd like to care for you while your leg heals. crows-in-background FX: 5 [She drops her gaze. The photographer blushes and smiles back.] narration: This is exactly what they mean by, "Let your opponent cut your flesh, while you cut through his bones*"-- no, wrong one... They say, "Good luck out of misfortune"!! <*Translation note (JW): This is a well-known samurai doctrine. Grandpa mistakenly cites it here to suggest that paying a minor sacrifice yields the greater gain.> 6 [Under the shade of a tree on a hill, the two stand and kiss.] narration: And then... Unnoticed, the two fell in love... cicada FX: --------------------------------------------------- p 228 (80) 1 [Facial portrait of Grandpa, who is, of course, the father of the "daughter" in this story--that is, Kyousuke's mom... He glares back at us.] father: Whaaaat?! Give you my daughter?! narration: It was her father who became angry. 2 [The daughter and photographer wince under the verbal blast.] father: [off] Never!! I can't very well give her to some guy I don't know who's a nobody as well!! 3 father: First of all... An ordinary man like you is not a suitable match for my daughter! We are a different kind!! photographer: Eh? 4 [Hikaru and Kyousuke appear startled.] 5 Hikaru: What do you mean by "we are a different kind?" Kyousuke: (Maybe this story is about...) 6 Grandpa: Naturally... My daughter possesses the Power... narration: This is about Mom and Dad?! [Kyousuke claps his hand over Grandpa's mouth once more.] Kyousuke FX: 7 [Back to the story... Father and photographer sit face-to-face and shout at each other.] father: ANYWAY, GO BACK TO THE CITY AT ONCE! FX: photographer: NO! --------------------------------------------------- p 229 (81) 1 [View pans back to show the daughter at the photographer's side.] photographer: [pounding the floor] I'm not moving one step from here until I receive your daughter! photographer FX: father: (This young fellow talked back to me without any hesitation...) 2 father: All right. I'll give you my daughter. But I have one condition! father FX: 3 [Night view of booths at a fair.] father: [off] This very day is the village summer festival. 4 [View of the fireworks in the skies over the rope bridge at the lake.] father: [off] How's this? Why not drink some sake with me here while we watch some fireworks? photographer: [off] EH?! 5 photographer: [smiling] O-ohh... If that's all it takes to get your daughter, I'll have as many... father: However... I am one of those who prefers whisky. 6 father: Even though it's summer, there is permanent snow around that mountain peak. It's been my hope for a long while to have a drink of sake mixed with that snow while watching the fireworks. 7 [Photographer and daughter stare back in surprise.] --------------------------------------------------- p 230 (82) 1 photographer: In other words... Go and get that snow. father: You got it. 2 father: If you bring back some snow, and drink sake with me before the fireworks end... Then you can have my daughter! 3 photographer: [resolute] I understand! daughter: Wait a minute, otousan. A thing like that is impossible. It takes 2 days for a normal human to go to that mountain and back. Furthermore, he only just recovered from a leg injury. 4 daughter: I'll go instead! father: No! You'll wait here. 5 father: [sauntering away] Why don't you go and prepare tonight's drink... 6 father FX: father: (He won't be able to climb that steep mountain, which has possibly only been scaled by mountaineers and antelopes. There's no way he can climb that. It'll cause him to turn tail and run back to the city.) 7 [The photographer heads off with just a canteen. The daughter sees him off with worry on her face.] photographer: Don't worry! I'll be back in time for the fireworks, no matter what!! narration: And the young man set off... --------------------------------------------------- p 231 (83) 1 [Tight shot of a hand grasping a rock on a cliff face.] narration: But... The mountain was steep, indeed. photographer FX: 2 [The rock comes loose and he plummets, backwards.] rocks FX: photographer: Wahhh! 3 photographer: [lying on his back] Ouch... narration: Perhaps I might as well climb down the mountain and return to the city. 4 [A shot looking up past the trees to a circling hawk.] --------------------------------------------------- p 232 (84) 1 [Still lying exhausted on his back, the photographer stares up at the circling bird.] narration: Ahh... If only I could fly through the air like that bird, I'd be able to fetch the snow with just a single flight... 2 [Tight shot of the soaring hawk.] 3 [Elsewhere, the daughter stands in thought...] 4 [Hikaru, overcome with sadness, grabs Grandpa by his collar.] Hikaru: [shouting] How sad!! Do something, please!! Grandpa: Hey, hey. "Treat the elderly with care!*" = "treat the elderly with care" is a well-known slogan for = "Respect for Elderly Day" (Sept. 15).> Grandpa: W-wait. Gyaaaa. 5 [View of an exploding skyrocket in the night sky.] narration: But then... fireworks FX: 6 [The smiling and smug father fans himself.] father: Pitiful guy! Just as I thought, he didn't come back! fan FX: 7 [Appearing at the father's side, the photographer stands, holding a large amount of snow in his bare hands. Father does a spectacular pratfall.] photographer: Here's the snow, otousan! father pratfall FX: father: Ooh. --------------------------------------------------- p 233 (85) 1 father: [aghast] H-how?! 2 [In magical storytelling style, the daughter now appears as an exact twin of Hikaru. Clearly, this is Hikaru's pov of the story. The photographer (still as Kyousuke) puts his arm around her shoulder and she smiles happily.] photographer: With your daughter's help! fireworks FX: daughter: 3 Grandpa: And then... As they say, the couple tied the knot! Hikaru: Banza-a-ai!! 4 [Hikaru blushes, her hands clasped before her, and she looks up at the sky.] Hikaru: Sure enough, a man can turn into a superman if it's for the sake of the one he loves! Hikaru FX: 5 [Hikaru executes a flying neck-tackle of Kyousuke. He, Madoka and Yuusaku look on with eyes grown large.] Hikaru: Just like Darling!! A "man" is truly mighty! 6 [Tighter shot of Kyousuke--he still wears Hikaru around his neck. Kyousuke stares pensively off into the distance.] narration: It can't be... My dad shouldn't be able to do something superhuman like that... 7 [View of the night fair. Booths line both sides of a midway.] --------------------------------------------------- p 234 (86) 1 [Yuusaku, Madoka, Hikaru and Kyousuke walk down that midway. Grandpa walks on ahead.] banner: Festival 2 [Hikaru uses a paper scoop to catch goldfish in a cup. Obviously trying for the one that looks like Darling... ^_^ Yuusaku watches from over her shoulder.] 3 [Kyousuke and Grandpa turn to look at a booth. A boy tries his hand at hitting objects with a cork-shooting rifle.] gun FX: 4 Kyousuke: [rifle in hand] Ojiichan, shall I get you a side dish for your 'sake'? Grandpa: With the Power? 5 Kyousuke: [wincing] In a place like this, I'll play fair! 6 Kyousuke: [winking at Grandpa] Well, just count on me! I'm pretty good at this sort of thing. banner 1: Founder banner 2: Broiled... --------------------------------------------------- p 235 (87) 1 Grandpa: Oho. Then let's have a look at my grandson's skill! Kyousuke gun FX: 2 [He misses twice. His targets are cans and jars of food.] Kyousuke: (Huh?) can 1: Namasu can 2: boiled in Miso jar 1: Uni Kurage is vegetables flavored with vinegar, is the soup base or paste derived from soybeans, are sea urchin eggs (also a type of chestnut?) and is jellyfish.> 3 [Another cork goes awry.] Kyousuke: (Huh?) can 3: Curried Pumpkin jar 2: scallions 4 [From a couple booths away, Yuusaku looks at Kyousuke over his shoulder. In the foreground, Grandpa watches Kyousuke, and Hikaru looks happily at her plastic bag filled with goldfish.] Yuusaku: What? He hasn't hit anything. Let's go, let's go! gun FX: Kyousuke: Huhhh?! 5 Kyousuke: [blushing and sweating] Shit! Now of all times, I'm missing. But now that I've shot off my big mouth, I can't back out without getting something! 6 [Madoka appears at his elbow. Kyousuke pauses in his futile shooting to look at her in surprise.] Madoka: Your side--it's too loose! --------------------------------------------------- p 236 (88) 1 Madoka: [merrily] What's the matter? "I'm pretty good," didn't you say? [Kyousuke winces.] banner 3: Cuttlefish--Delicious! 2 Madoka: [off] Hey! Pull in your chin more. Kyousuke: [aiming] Y-yes! 3 [Direct hit!] cork on can FX: can 4: Takenoko Soup = bamboo shoots> Kyousuke: [off] Gotcha! 4 [Madoka's pov of him as he looks over his shoulder at her.] Kyousuke: (But...) 5 [Kyousuke's pov of her as she looks at the targets.] narration: The delicate smell of soap... So sexy... 6 Madoka: [sharply] Pay close attention to what's in front of you!! Kyousuke: R-right. banner 4: Broiled banner 5: Tasty --------------------------------------------------- p 237 (89) 1 [Isolated view of a booth selling windchimes.] Madoka: [off] Say... Wasn't ojiisan's story back then about your mother and father? Kyousuke: [off] Eh? 2 [His pov of her--she smiles gently back.] Madoka: For some reason, that young guy reminds me of you. 3 Madoka: If that's so, then it could have been your mother who helped out in that story. banner 6: Founder--Corn 4 [Kyousuke looks at her in surprise.] narration: ...Ayukawa's so sharp! I certainly thought that too!! 5 [The photographer and daughter stand on the slopes of a mountain--she points off-panel to one side. Madoka narrates...] narration: Your mother must have heard about the crisis from the bird, and led him to a shortcut that reaches the peak... Maybe ojiisan knew, but he forgave the two of them, having lost out to their feelings which were deep enough to make them disobey the rules*. < SAIREICommentary (JW): is actually a taboo or a rule that has been passed on for generations. With respect to the Kasuga family, it is a taboo among those who have the Power that they cannot marry "ordinary" people. Of course, Madoka couldn't have known that much, but she thought the village is one of those exclusive ones that don't allow outsiders to settle in, and so mistook the rule as being that only villagers marry villagers... (In the countryside there has always been a problem of "workforce" and "bride" shortage, as younger generations tend to move to cities. Grandpa's anti- city-dwellers sentiment in the past may have reinforced this idea as well.)> --------------------------------------------------- p 238 (90) 1 Kyousuke: But... How do you know all that... 2 [Madoka gazes off in the distance. This is a profile shot of her.] Madoka: Women always pray that things go well for the man they love. 3 [Kyousuke facial portrait--he looks surprised.] 4 [The fireworks show begins overhead.] narration: Somehow, I think it must be exactly as Ayukawa says. narration: Only one thing... Mom must have used the Power to help Dad... Aside from that... --------------------------------------------------- p 239 (91) 1 [Kyousuke--carrying lots of cans and jars--walks at Madoka's side down the fair's midway. They smile and chat together.] narration: The prizes the two of us received... The snow that was brought back by Mom and Dad... There's some resemblance. narration: Then, maybe the fact that Ayukawa is helping me like this also means... 2 [Pov from behind the two--light shines down upon Madoka's face and they look into each other's eyes.] narration: Illuminated by the lamps of the fair, Ayukawa's face is somehow blinding on this summer festival night... ---------------------------------------------------
