Japanese demon/monster, often depicted rather like trolls/ogres.)

Yura: Inuyasha - Youkai, but he's become the reincarnated priestess's lapdog,
Yura: and we know you intend to collect together the Shikon no Tama.
Inuyasha: Wha.

(    I deliberatly add the 'lapdog' pun - Yura actually says 'subordinate' not 'lapdog'.)

(    Incidentally, there is a Japanese word 'Oni-bi' (Oni fire). This referes to
small fires observed in dark graveyards during a rainy night. It is said
that the colour is blue, and of course, this is known as a very spooky phenomenon.)

The word 'Youkai' used here in the Japanese text can be translated as
'monster', 'demon' and so on. However, it is actually a more general term
used to describe a creature which has magical and/or spiritual powers, and
tends to be evil. There isn't a good single word translation of this in

to lose your head, and his real name isn't known. Since he is not the head
of the whole army, it is possible that he is a vassal who was given a
castle by the _Daimyo_ - feudal lord.)

manners for a noble woman to speak in a rough or arrogant manner toward her
son), (2) The mother and the son haven't seen each other for a long time,
and (3) The mother has a mild personality.)

platform for a statue of Buddha called 'renge-za' (Lotus Flower Seat). It
looks like the upper surface is supported by many petals of lotus, and the
statue of the Buddha stands, or sits on the surface. You can see many such
statues supported by platforms looking similar to this one, if you visit
Buddhism temples in Japan or other countries. 
The ornament you can see on the platform represents flame, which is
supposed to be seen behind the back of the statue. This represents the
energy or aura emitted from the Buddha. Something similar to a "halo" is
also used for this purpose.]

someone does when testing the blade of a newly recieved katana. This might
be done on a bundle of straw, but mainly by cutting the corpses of executed
criminals. This served as a training method for cutting human bodies in
real practice, as well as a quality test for the katanas. Naturally, the
value of katanas that experienced _Tameshi Giri_ was higher than other katanas.)

seeing it for yourself. If you enjoy the series, I would strongly
recommend buying the 'tankoubon' (collected version, each about 180
pages or 10 chapters long, costing 410 yen) when they become available
- the first was released on 18th April 1997, and the first 15 are now
available.

as well as violence, though this is only when it is present in the

right eye was badly damaged by Sesshoumaru, Inuyasha now has it open again,
though it has not yet healed - until just now, he kept his right eye
squinted shut.]
Fx sound: *rumble-rumble...*
Fx katana: ba-bump
Fx Sesshoumaru: *hoarse breathing*
Inuyasha: .oO(I can hear it... Tetsusaiga's heartbeat...).

Jaken stares on in shock, while behind him, Kagome looks on in surprise.]

a blazing trail of energy.]

[Inuyasha stands looking at the blade held in front of him, which has now
changed considerably. It is about 3 inches wide at the hilt, widening
several inchs up the blade and curving slightly. It looks about as long as
Inuyasha is tall, and is smooth and white, and glowing at the end. In the
trailer a week before the series started, Inuyasha was shown with a large,
wrapped up sword over his shoulder - looks like he has it now.]
Fx katana: *keen metallic ringing...*
Fx katana: *massive feeling...*
Inuyasha: .oO(This is...).
Inuyasha: .oO(a tusk!?).

in front of him, looking puzzled. Also, not only has Inuyasha's right eye
completely healed, and also his coat is now undamaged - part of the sleeve
had been melted by Sesshoumaru.]
Fx Inuyasha: *swinging katana*

(     By the way, the tree behind him looks like it's budding again - ie that
it's Spring. However, from a story continuity point of view, no more than a
week could have passed since it was 'Autumn'. It appears, that like Ranma
1/2, the seasons in the story will pass at the same rate as the story's
being written (ie when it's Autumn in Japan, it's Autumn in the story, and
likewise for the rest of the seasons), irrelevant of story itself, or the
logical paradoxes this produces. Never mind, it's just background.)

[Inuyasha looks at the rusty blade in confusion, while Kagome (overlaid)
looks on.]
Inuyasha: What's with this thing...
Inuyasha: it's become a damn rusty katana again.

(    A phrase like "I'll protect you your whole life" is rather close to being a
_marriage proposal_, and can if fact be taken as one. Inuyasha really
didn't say that - it's just Kagome's memory going again, or reading too
much into the situation.)

Kagome: I'm an idiot who thought there was some chance you might be a nice guy.
Inuyasha: Wait,
Inuyasha: tell me how to use it.
